Active Learning in US Context

In this session, we will introduce GTAs to the pedagogical norm of active learning as it is commonly understood and practiced in U.S. higher education. While instructional approaches vary globally, U.S. colleges and universities increasingly emphasize forms of teaching that require students to engage intellectually, reflectively and collaboratively during class time. Drawing on research demonstrating the effectiveness of active and collaborative learning approaches, this session explores what active learning means in practice, how it differs from purely transmissive instructional models and how instructors can adapt active learning strategies in ways that are appropriate to their discipline, course level and teaching context.
