Recognizing the Ones Too Often Left Behind: And Doing Something About It

Some individuals don’t test well, even though they have great comprehension of material. There are students who don’t participate in class discussions, even though they are thoroughly prepared and have something to say. There are always students who don’t buy the required textbook because they must choose between the book and food.
During this conference, we will look at reframing some common academic challenges for those students who struggle in ways we don’t often realize. This is not all about pointing a finger at the multitude of challenges students face; there will be solutions as well. Instead of being frustrated that a student doesn’t speak up, perhaps we could consider what would help give that student an opportunity to have their voice heard.
Speaker: Todd D. Zakrajsek, PhD, is an adjunct associate professor in the School of Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Prior to joining the SOM, he was a tenured associate professor of psychology and built faculty development efforts at three universities.
Zakrajsek has authored/co-authored six books in the past seven years and has given keynote addresses, campus workshops and conference presentations in 49 states, 12 countries and four continents. Learn more about Zakrajsek and the topic we will explore in this conference.
The event begins with a complimentary lunch at 11:30 a.m. Zakrajsek will lecture during the meal and then facilitate an interactive workshop from 1-2 p.m.
